A visit to a gorgeous garden, a mansion & Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s sculptures at Planting Fields on August 19

  • August 11, 2018 - August 19, 2018
    10:00 am - 8:00 am

Join us on August 19th as we take the Long Island Railroad to Oyster Bay and walk to the Planting Fields Garden and mansion. As we walk through Oyster Bay, I will point a few interesting places, but we won’t be touring the town. Our goal is to reach the Planting Fields and Coe Hall. It is at the hall where we will see a collection of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney’s work. For instance, there are realist bronzes of First World War soldiers. Have you seen her WWI sculpture on Broadway for the Washington Heights & Inwood World War I Memorial? It is incredible and worth a trip to view it. Did you know that this is the centennial for the end of the First World War? Also, did you know she worked as a nurse at the front in WWI? This is the first exhibition of her work since her death in 1942. It is worth the one and a half mile walk to visit (45 minutes to 1 hour).

Planting Field is one of the few remaining Gold Coast Estates in Long Island. Originally, it was the estate of William Roberston Coe, an insurance magnate and his wife Mai Rogers Coe who was an heiress to Standard Oil. The mansion has many original pieces that belonged to the family. It is worth viewing one of the Gold Coast mansions. Coe Hall is open from 11:00am to 3:30pm.

    1. When you go to the home page of http://www.specialplacestosee.com at the bottom of the page is the subscription form. All you need to do is add your email address. I just sent out the newsletter for August events and a sneak peak into what is currently being planned for September.

  2. I am checking and the possibility of scatter showers/thundestorms has dropped from 60% to 50%. If it drops to 40% by tomorrow at 12N, I will commit to this event, but will take an umbrella as a precaution. Please let me know if you have changed your mind about attending this event. Thank you.

    1. Due to 90% precipitation for Saturday, I am rescheduling the Planting Fields event from Saturday, 8/11 to SUNDAY 8/19. I will adjust the details to represent Sunday. I hope you will be able to join me after this change.
